Writing 1000 words a day

I am currently reading “Making a Literary Life” by Carolyn See.

1,000 words a day. I keep seeing this in authors’ advise to the fledgling writer. When and how do you get in 1,000 words?

So I am going to try for 200 words. This is one-fifth of the recommended amount. And it may take me longer.

But hey, this right now is a hobby. Wouldn’t mind getting paid for it, it would be fun! I have an assignment due -yes it is writing! I wonder if it counts? I have a blanket and a pair of socks to knit. I have a nine-year old who requires my attention and I am healing from jaw surgery. (A topic for another blog).

But back to the 1,000 words. What are those 1,000 words supposed to be about? The book you are currently working on? The blog that you can’t seem to keep up with? The idea that keeps percolating in your head?

Another thing I’ve seen suggested is writing a brief note to someone in the literary world each day. Ummmm-hmmmm… What do you say in those? Who do you write? how? where? ugh….

Yes, it makes sense, your name gets out there. But which name? hah!

So far now, I will try to write 200 words in between everything else. And once I am consistent with that I’ll try 300, then 500 (what’s 200 more?) then 750, and eventually 1000.

I am starting to have this sinking feeling I lack imagination.

Maybe if I keep three – four ideas running… Now where and how do I fit in research?

I had the chance to be stuck driving on the street one day and be behind a pedestrian who insisted on walking the entire block length going from one side of the street to the next. In a diagonal line! Just crossing the street. AAAHHH!!!!

Well anyways this kind of popped into my head on the way home. Not sure of the genre though.

The programmer ran her hands through her hair in frustration, the droid sat plugged in to the computer system as she attempted to run a new program that would hopefully get him across the street without another accident.

“I am programmed to learn as I go.” Max-418 said as he watched his creator grow more frustrated.

Observe street lights, observe cars, walk to corner of sidewalk, walk when light =walk

‘Delete’

Walk in front of cars when cars are stopped. Look all four ways before crossing street.

Make sure all cars are stopped.

‘Delete!’ she removed the words again, the sequence wasn’t adding up and she know she was forgetting something.

Walk into street between cars…

“Okay, knock it off and let me write this.” She continued to type.

GO to corner of sidewalk

STOP

FACE Direction wish to travel

WAIT for crossing signal to = WALK IF not WALK then WHITE MAN SYMBOL

If RED HAND DON’T WALK

CROSS STREET; Carry out previous activity before intersection.

She pushed the download button and waited.

Download complete flashed across her screen.

Max-418 unplugged himself, “I’ll go to the store for those parts now.”

“Okay,” the programmer had turned to programing the satellite when a troublesome thought crossed her mind.

“Did I forget something?” The sound of tires screeching and a loud bang was her answer. With a huge sigh she saved the work she was currently processing and searched the messy loft for her ID and bank card. The police would need to deduct funds for delivery and charges, and set up the link to her insurance. She pondered the thought that it was sad that she knew the routine, though it wasn’t always her fault.

At the pounding on her door she opened it. Well Max-148 was in pieces. She handed the cards to the officer and wheeled the basket to her work bench. She proceeded to unload Max-148 and plugged him into the computer system while the office ran her cards.

Once he was done and the door to the loft shut; she started the program to build new parts for Max-148.

She hit enter. Looking at the time the programmer realized she needed to recharge. She went and lay down on the custom built bed. Once she was confortable she reached into the door in her forearm, retrieved the cord and plugged herself into the charging station.

System standby. Recharge 24 hours: FILE MAX-1.

Almost there…

Okay, a while ago I started pursuing my Masters in Accounting and Finance Management. So not going well. I have since then changed to a certificate program, but will be taking a session off before finishing my last to classes.

There is a lot more to accounting than I had first thought. I didn’t realize all the rules and regulations that were out there. ( I mean that’s why I decided not to become an architect, too many rules) There’s GAAP, iGAAP, SOX, FASB… the list of governmental regulators is vast.

I can see why CFO’s are jumping ship and that it is no longer a stepping stone to the CEO position. They now must understand and comprehend their financial statements. I don’t comprehend them… oh well. I like my job.

Now home?? Not so much. Well we won’t go there…

But soon… I will be on break and able to go back to Absolute Write. I tried to do NANOWRIMO this year. Didn’t work. I did get 2,000 words written though. Had to take a leave of absence from ICL, take that back up in February, so between now and then I need to pull out my homework and get it done. Only thing? I dropped the portable hard drive it is on and have to send it in to get everything retrieved, IF they can. That totally sucks.

Well the new year is coming up, let’s make it a better one!!

Miss Writing

I completely miss writing. I have a few weeks to get it in before my next accounting class. I have an assignment to rewrite and a query letter too. If all goes well I may be able to submit it.

Masters in Accounting and Finance

Okay. I have heard good things and bad things about DeVry.
So far, I have no complaints.
Only the second class.
The reason I am going here is because I cannot afford to go to school during the day and loose my medical and dental that I have from my current job.
Soo, I have learned that one class for my masters is almost an equivelant to the credit load I was taking when I obtained my bachelors.
Only complaint- I am running very behind on my writing class…

Thanksgiving

It’s been a long tradition that when we have Thanksgiving at my parent’s house, we sit at the oak dining room table. We’ve had the table for about twenty years now and continue to take turns saying what we are thankful for.

For me, this is not my favorite part. I have consistently taken the easy way out and simply said “my family and this meal.” Okay, now almost everyone says that and as old as I am, I should be able to express myself a little more eloquently.

This is the first Thanksgiving in four or five years where we will all be home. So that’s one thing to be grateful for. I have a job in this tough economy and with budget cuts and the fear of layoffs in the future; I hope I keep it. Yes, I have my complaints about my job, but who doesn’t? Yet there are many things this job allows for tha I am no so sure I would find anywhere else. I have health and dental insurance, good holidays, work monday through friday and get the time when necessary to take care of family matters.

I have a family who is supportive though sometimes deservedly irritated of my goals fr the future. Who provide the kick in the pants when I sit on the fence for too long in my indescision of which way to go in life.

There really are many things to be thankful for; a roof over my head, food to eat, transportation, a patient child because I admit I am not always ont he ball with being a parent), good co-workers and wi-fi.

So now the day before Thanksgiving dinner, it is not the shopping for my part of the meal or the crowds in the stores, or finding time to prepare my salad and appetizers that causes me stress. It’s saying what I am thankful for without sounding cheesy, corny, greedy, giving away too much or ungrateful.
